Dice Throne Review: The 1v1 Brawler That Killed Magic The Gathering
Basically: If you are looking for a fast, beautiful, and absolutely ruthless 1v1 dueling game, look no further. Dice Throne has completely taken over our table as the ultimate head-to-head battler. It is fast, it is incredibly fun, and I recently got completely humiliated by a kid playing Loki.
For years, Magic the Gathering was the undisputed king of 1v1 battles in my house. But recently, a new challenger stepped up and completely knocked it off the table. Dice Throne is an absolute blast. It is ridiculously easy to get into, deeply strategic, and constantly expanding.
Right now, we are running a six-character roster. We have the Marvel box set featuring Thor, Scarlet Witch, Loki, and Miles Morales, along with the classic Treant and Ninja two-pack. I have personally taken Thor, Loki, Miles, and the Treant into the arena. Wyatt, being the absolute gaming machine that he is, has already played every single one of them.
How It Works
The easiest way to describe Dice Throne is combat Yahtzee on steroids. You and your opponent face off using custom dice and incredibly well-designed player boards. On your turn, you get up to three rolls to lock in specific symbols or numbers to trigger your hero’s attacks.
But it is not just luck. You also have a hand of cards that you pay for with combat points. These cards let you permanently upgrade your board abilities, alter dice rolls after the fact, or hit your opponent with status effects. You are constantly balancing the luck of the roll with the strategy in your hand.
The Production Value
Everything in these boxes feels premium. The custom dice are chunky and satisfying to roll. The character boards keep your table perfectly organized. And the artwork? It is stunning across the board. Every character has a distinct visual flair that matches their playstyle perfectly.
A Warning About Loki
I do have to issue a massive public service announcement. If you are playing against someone with a freakishly good memory or insane luck, be very careful when they lock in Loki.
Loki has a defense ability that operates exactly like a street corner shell game. He puts down three cards: one reflects full damage, one reflects half, and one takes the hit. Wyatt grew up playing all those Wii party games where you have to track the ball under the shuffling cups. He tracked those cards with terrifying accuracy, picked the full damage reflection every single time, and absolutely wrecked me. It was brutal.
The Kid’s Take (Wyatt, Age 7)
He has mastered our entire roster, including the characters I haven’t even touched yet like Scarlet Witch and Ninja. The fact that a 7-year-old can easily grasp the unique nuances of each deck, track defensive shells like a Vegas card counter, and consistently outplay adults speaks volumes about how well this game is balanced and designed.
The Future
The best part about Dice Throne is that it is a living ecosystem. They are constantly dropping new characters, and there is even a video game adaptation coming out soon that I am incredibly hyped for. This review will definitely be getting updates as we inevitably add more boxes to the shelf.
Final Verdict
Whether you want to sling spells as Scarlet Witch or smash things as a giant tree, Dice Throne is the perfect 1v1 game. Go buy it.
