Superman Review – James Gunn Woke Me Up

People keep saying Superman is “woke”—well, if that’s the case, then I guess it woke me up to superhero movies again, because honestly, they’ve been putting me to sleep for years. And wow… this movie was fantastic.

James Gunn managed to deliver exactly what I expected while still subverting my expectations. It’s a classic underdog superhero story at its core, but it’s done so well that it feels fresh, exciting, and heartfelt.

Spoilers Ahead

Okay, spoilers incoming—you’ve been warned.

I had a hunch the Hammer of Boravia was going to be Ultraman, or maybe even a second clone leading to Bizarro. Gunn has always shown respect for source material, so I didn’t expect him to veer too far off the path. Still, when it happened, I loved it.

Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner? Absolute perfection. He’s such an idiotic goof, and he nailed the role. I was worried the “Justice Gang” might end up antagonistic toward Superman, but I was thrilled to see them standing united. It made those team moments even better.

Krypto & Supergirl

One character that threw me off a bit was Krypto. His wild, unruly behavior felt out of step with the tone of the movie and the way the rest of the characters were handled. It almost felt like he didn’t belong. But then, when Supergirl showed up to pick up her dog, it all clicked into place. Suddenly, that concern melted away and made complete sense in the bigger picture. It was a clever reveal and a great way to tie the two characters together.

The Little Details That Hit Big

One thing I didn’t even realize until someone pointed it out afterward—they actually went with the traditional red trunks on the outside. And you know what? It looks amazing. Not goofy, not cheesy—they nailed it. It’s those little nods to the character’s history that made me smile throughout the film.

Action & Tone

The fight scenes? Fantastic. Terrific, even. Mr. Terrific absolutely stole the show for me when he took down those soldiers with his T-Spheres—it was one of the best superhero action sequences I’ve seen in years.

The movie balances itself so well—it’s serious when it needs to be, silly in the right places, and inspiring all the way through.

Final Thoughts

This is the Superman movie I’ve been waiting for. It respects the character, delivers exciting action, and reminds us why the Man of Steel is still the gold standard of superheroes. Gunn didn’t just wake me up—he reminded me why I fell in love with superhero movies in the first place.
