Survive the Island – Chaos, Creatures, and Kid-Approved Fun

Sometimes a board game doesn’t need to be complicated to be a hit—it just needs to create memorable moments. Survive the Island nails this perfectly. It’s easy to learn, fast to set up, and before you know it, the table is full of laughter, chaos, and maybe even a little bit of sabotage.

Gameplay in a Nutshell

The premise is simple: get your survivors off the sinking island and onto safe ground before the creatures (and your opponents) take you out. But the real spice is that you also get to control the monsters. Sharks, sea serpents, whales—they’re all yours to command when it’s your turn, and they can wreak absolute havoc on your opponents’ best-laid plans.

Our Play Experience

My son jumped into this game quickly and at one point realized he couldn’t win—so he pivoted to full chaos mode, unleashing creatures on everyone else. And honestly? It was hilarious. Even when he was in last place, he was having fun watching rafts sink and survivors get gobbled up. Losing in this game doesn’t feel like punishment—it feels like a chance to make the table explode in laughter.

One of my favorite mechanics is that you don’t know who’s actually winning until the very end. Survivors have hidden point values, so even if you saved more people than the other players, you might still lose to someone whose survivors were worth more. That endgame reveal had us all leaning forward, excited to flip tokens and see who actually came out on top.

Final Thoughts

Survive the Island is pure fun. It’s easy to teach, chaotic in the best way, and the creatures make every turn unpredictable. Whether you’re winning or “losing with style,” the game keeps everyone engaged right up until the last survivor makes it to shore.

This one’s officially earned a permanent spot in our board game library. It’s highly recommended, and yes—it’s kid approved.
