Wild Realms: The Best Unboxing Experience I’ve Had This Year
Let’s be honest: I open a lot of board game boxes. Usually, it’s a sea of beige cardboard and plastic baggies that I have to wrestle with. But Wild Realms? This might be the single best unboxing experience I’ve had in recent memory.
Everything about this package screams premium. The box itself feels sturdy and designed with care. The player boards are massive and laid out exquisitely. But the real stars are the cards. They went with oversized tarot cards, which was a brilliant choice because the artwork is absolutely incredible. Every single card features unique illustrations—62 of them—and seeing a massive lion or a tiny ant rendered in this style is just cool.
The Gameplay: Nature is Metal
The game itself is a competitive set-collection race. You are trying to be the first to "lock" four different realms (Air, Land, Water, Fire) by defending them with animal allies.
It’s effectively a war game, but instead of tanks or space marines, you’re deploying the animal kingdom. The "leaders" range from apex predators to small insects, and the scaling somehow works perfectly. There is a "take that" element where you attack opponents to knockout their defenders, which adds a nice layer of spite to the table.
The Solo Mode?
I haven’t dipped into the solo mode yet—it’s not usually my go-to—but I’m actually planning to give this one a shot. The system involves a "Wild" deck that acts as an automated opponent, and frankly, I just want an excuse to get these components back on the table.
Final Verdict
If you are a sucker for production value, Wild Realms is a must-have. The gameplay is solid, the theme is integrated beautifully, and it just feels great to play. Highly recommended for anyone who wants their game night to look a little more majestic.
